Why is Dental Health ReaIly important During Pregnancy?

Maintaining optimal dental health during pregnancy is difficult due to significant hormonal shifts, which can increase the likelihood of oral health complications.

Some reasons why dental health is very important during pregnancy –

Hormonal Fluctuations: Hormonal changes during pregnancy may increase the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. It makes gums more susceptible to plaque, which can cause swelling and bleeding.

Pregnancy Gingivitis: Many pregnant women suffer from a dental health disease known as pregnancy gingivitis. Gums that are affected by this minor form of gum disease become swollen, painful, and inflamed. If neglected, it can worsen into gum disease, which can result in tooth loss and other dental issues.

Tooth Decay: Pregnancy can heighten the risk of tooth decay, especially if the mother experiences morning sickness or craves sugary foods. Frequent vomiting can expose teeth to stomach acid, which can corrode tooth enamel and heighten the likelihood of cavities.

Gestational Diabetes: Pregnant women with deficient dental health are also at a greater risk of developing gestational diabetes. This is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy and can cause complications for both the mother and the baby.

To ensure good dental health during pregnancy, it is very important to:

  1. Brush teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  2. Floss daily
  3. Consume a healthy diet enriched with vitamins and minerals
  4. Avoid sugary and acidic foods and beverages
  5. Visit the dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings
  6. Inform the dentist of pregnancy and any medications being taken

Maintaining optimal dental health during pregnancy is crucial for the health and well-being of both the mother and the baby.
